LeBron James 309x206 Heat come back from 12 down and advance to NBA finals

With 3:14 left in the fourth quarter, the Chicago Bulls looked in total control of Game 5 up 77-65. The Miami Heat had only made 20 field goals thus far in the game and the offense looked stagnant. This one seemed destined for a return trip to South Beach.

But then, LeBron James and Dwyane Wade woke up from their slumber and absolutely exploded. Wade, who looked like he was fighting an injury, scored eight points down the stretch including a four point play that pulled the Heat to within three with 1:30 left. LeBron followed that up with a three of his own on the next possession and a 21-foot jumper on the next to put the Heat up for good.

All in all, the big three outscored the Bulls 18-3 in the game’s final three minutes. You could make an argument that the Heat made a miraculous comeback despite some solid play from the Bulls. But that argument couldn’t be further from the truth. Derrick Rose, the league MVP, committed two costly turnovers and missed a free throw that would have tied the game with 26 seconds left.

To top it off, the Bulls last possession was something of a comedic reel. It was as if Tom Thibodeau told the team during a timeout to give him their best Three Stooges impression.

There’s no shame in losing, especially when you’re a team as young as the Bulls. But the manner in which they lost was indeed depressing both for the team and for the fan base. Something that will indeed gnaw at them the rest of the summer.
