Iowa wrestler refuses to face girl in match
Having never met Joel Northup, a home-schooled sophomore in Iowa, I would still describe him as a gentleman. How else can you explain his unwillingness to wrestle a girl at a state tournament?
Joel Northup was 35-4 wrestling for Linn-Mar High this season, said in a statement Thursday that he doesn’t feel it would be right for him to wrestle Cedar Falls freshman Cassy Herkelman.
Northup said in a statement that he has “tremendous” respect for the girls’ accomplishments, but doesn’t feel it’s appropriate for boys to engage girls in a combat sport.
Would it be ok for a female boxer to match-up against a male in the same weight class? What about in MMA?
As somebody who had to wrestle a girl everyday in high school, I can tell you that it is a most uncomfortable situation. In all seriousness, hands go in strange spots during a match, whether it be in the groin or chest area, and there’s essentially no way to avoid it. On top of that, the girl I was going against was freakin awful and I found myself pinning her usually within 20-30 seconds. I wasn’t getting any better as a wrestler and I’m guessing she certainly didn’t enjoy my muscular, hard body laying on top of her several times a day.
Um, actually, come to think of it, maybe she did. Maybe it was all a ruse to get some of this.
Ugh, I feel so violated.
