If you thought Purdue’s Matt Painter was comfortable in West Lafayette, you were wrong. Less than a week after being ousted from the tournament by VCU, Painter is being courted by Missouri. Most would argue that the Purdue job is light years ahead of Missouri, which makes people think that Painter is just trying to get his alma mater to pony up some more cash. But now, the courting seems legit and there is a very real possibility that Painter will take the 7-year, $14 million deal. Shocking to say the least.
We don’t normally hit on women’s basketball in any form here, be it college or professional, so bear with us while we stumble over this. Notre Dame, which had lost 20 in a row to the mighty Tennessee Vols finally defeated them to advance to the Women’s Final Four. It’s the Irish’s first trip there since 2001 when they won the National Championship. They’ll have some serious competition to reach the finals though as top ranked Connecticut is waiting in the wings.
You gotta give Carmelo Anthony credit. Because of how bad the Knicks had been playing recently, he had declared Monday Night’s game a must-win–and he backed up his own claim. The forward dropped 39 points and pulled down 10 rebounds on the Orlando Magic en route to a 113-106 win. After, Anthony didn’t put the spotlight on himself but rather the whole team, That’s how I felt, that’s how we felt as a team, that it was a must win for us. We, as a team, backed it up tonight.”
The AP All-American College Basketball team was announced and no surprise here as BYU star Jimmer Fredette led the way receiving all but one of the 65 national media votes. Fredette is the first Cougars player to make it on the team since the venerable Danny Ainge did it in 1981. He’s joined by Duke’s Nolan Smith, Connecticut’s Kemba Walker, Ohio State’s Jared Sullinger, and Purdue’s JuJuan Johnson. Oddly enough, Walker is the only one still left in the tourney.
