James Harrison bashes Roger Goodell in Men’s Journal article
James Harrison is no stranger to controversy. Twice he has skipped out on team visits to the White House (after the Super Bowl) saying “”I don’t feel like it’s that big a deal to me”. Well, you know what is a big deal? Bashing NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, posing with guns, and accusing the league of cheating for the Patriots. Quite a misstep there Mr. Harrison.
Here’s an excerpt from the article in Men’s Journal (the whole thing is worth a read).
“But up until last year, there was no word of me being dirty — till Roger Goodell, who’s a crook and a puppet, said I was the dirtiest player in the league. If that man was on fire and I had to piss to put him out, I wouldn’t do it. I hate him and will never respect him.”
On the 2004 season:
“I should have another ring. We were the best team in football in 2004, but the Patriots, who we beat during the regular season, stole our signals and picked up 90 percent of our blitzes [in the AFC title game]. They got busted for it later, but, hey, they’re Goodell’s boys, so he slapped ‘em $500,000 and burned the tapes. Was he going to rescind their Super Bowls? Man, hell no!”
As far as the posing with guns is concerned, this isn’t a first for Harrison. In 2006, several Steelers were photographed with what appeared to be automatic weapons.

When the lockout ends (if it ends), it will be interesting to see how the league handles this. What’s also interesting is the timing of the Men’s Journal article. The day after the MLB All-Star game is widely regarded as the slowest news day in sports. Maximum exposure? Probably. Especially since the print edition is not due out for a few days/weeks.
