Jo Wilfried Tsonga enjoys the taste of balls
There were some tense moments in yesterday’s Jo Wilfried Tsonga-Mardy Fish match. The New York crowd, known to be a bit more boisterous than other tennis fans, were clearly in Fish’s corner–chanting his name and urging him on early in the match.
Tsonga, clearly agitated at his play, bit a tennis ball after dropping the second set.
Later, there was a brief exchange when Tsonga complained to the chair umpire about Mardy Fish’s box “screaming” at him. The two shared some words and the situation seem resolved.
In the fifth set, however, with Fish on the ropes, words were exchanged again. And this time, it was a bit more heated.
Tsonga went on to win the match and there appeared to be no hard feelings when the two shook hands at net. When asked about the insult in a press conference afterwards, Fish had this to say.
“I was talking to the umpire. I probably shouldn’t have said that. Like I said, we were fired up,” Fish said.
Clearly a lie on Fish’s part but nonetheless, Tsonga didn’t seem to care to much. He won, he’s moving on and Fish will be watching the rest of the Open from his couch.
