Let me get this straight. Reggie Bush essentially has an agent buy him a house that his family lives in and the NCAA turns a blind eye. Then O.J. Mayo receives thousands of dollars while he was in high school and at USC. And now running back Joe McKnight has a car that belongs to a L.A. businessman who registers websites in his name?
Uh, what is going on?
Late Friday, the Los Angeles Times reported that McKnight had been using a 2006 Land Rover that belonged to a Santa Monica businessman who reportedly employs McKnight’s girlfriend. That could violate NCAA rules as an extra benefit, which could also make the junior ineligible for the bowl game.
McCoy will be replaced by sophomore Rhett Ellison, while redshirt freshman Matt Kalil will replace Smith.
McKnight has denied driving the car, but the Los Angeles Times said in a story that one of its reporters has seen USC’s leading rusher driving the SUV several times.
I think we all realize now that in the NCAA, there are “have” and “have nots”. If you’re a Baylor or a SMU and this stuff happens, well, you might as well shut down your athletic department because sanctions are going to be fierce.
But if you’re the Trojans or the Buckeyes and your players are flaunting cars and money around campus, don’t you worry. The investigators won’t find anything concrete or paperwork will magically get lost.
The “have” and “have nots”.
