Joe Torre to be replaced by Don Mattingly at end of season
While hitting coach Don Mattingly was certainly being groomed as the eventual Joe Torre successor in L.A., he probably never thought it would come this early. According to ESPN, Joe Torre’s reign as manager of the Dodgers will come to a close at the end of this year. A press conference will be held later on today but for now, Mattingly and GM Ned Colletti have issued statements.
Don Mattingly:
“The opportunity to manage the Los Angeles Dodgers is truly an honor. There are few organizations in the world with the history, tradition and track record of success as the Dodgers. I’m looking forward to continuing what I came here to accomplish with Joe and that’s to win a world championship.”
Ned Coletti:
“Over the past three years, I’ve had the opportunity to work with Don closely and have gotten to know him both personally and professionally and I’m convinced that he’s the right person to lead the Dodgers. His work ethic is unparalleled, his baseball knowledge is vast and his leadership skills have been established during more than three decades in professional baseball.”
Joe Torre’s career as a manager has unquestionably had its up and downs. He’s been the manager of five major league teams but has only had success with one. In fact, he has a sub-500 record with the Mets and the Cardinals.
But his run with the Yankees may go down as one of the most dominant from any manager in the modern era. From 1996-2003, he led the Bronx Bombers to six AL pennants and 4 World Series titles. That’s more than enough to one day get Torre into the Baseball Hall of Fame.
