Guyism’s daily look at what’s hot in the world of sports.
Detroit Red Wings forward Johan Franzen scored 5 goals in a 7-5 victory over the Ottawa Senators last night. He’s the first player to score that many goals in a game since 2007. “I’ve only been in here twice, I think, but I scored two goals the last time I was here,” he said. “I like this building.” Quite an understatement, Mr. Franzen.
Pittsburgh Steelers center Maurkice Pouncey is a tough guy. Nobody on his team or in the NFL for that matter would dispute that. But trying to play on a severely high ankle sprain for the Super Bowl? Well, that might just be crazy. Pouncey has told people that he is about 75% certain he will play this weekend. I’m guessing the 25% pertains to mental health and sanity.
Dallas Mavericks forward Dirk Nowitzki hit an NBA milestone last night as he passed 22,000 points for his career. To give you an idea of how great an accomplishment that is, only 23 players in NBA history have scored more points than him. Give it a few weeks and he’ll pass Hall of Famer Clyde Drexler on the list too. What’s even more amazing is that if you asked the average NBA fan about Dirk, most would say he’s not one of the greatest forwards of all-time. A true testament that scoring is only a fraction of the game.
BYU sensation Jimmer Fredrette had an off night against Wyoming. How else can you explain his 26 points, well below his season average. Jimmer was ice cold from the field, 7 of 21 to be exact and the team itself scored 15 points below their average. All that said, BYU was somehow able to sneak out a win in Laramie. But they have just set the blueprint for defeating the Cougars in the NCAA tournament. Pray that Jimmer has an off-night…
