Guyism’s daily look at what’s hot in the world of sports.
Gilbert Arenas is taking a lot of heat in D.C. from both reporters and fans for faking an injury. If the gesture had probably come from someone who hadn’t served a 50-game suspension, than it might have been received better. Arenas faked an injury so Nick Young would have a chance to get minutes and possibly make the team. All in all, not that big of a deal and Arenas was fined for it. This is getting way too much attention. Let’s get back to talking about guns.
When something looks too good to be true folks, that’s because it usually is. John Elway and a group of his business partners lost close to 15 million dollars in a Ponzi scheme. Sean Mueller used new investors’ cash flow to pay for investors who had been in the fund for awhile. Seems simple enough and yet, some very smart and very wealthy people have fallen for it in recent year.
Tommie Smith, who famously raised his fist in a show of black empowerment at the 1968 Gold Medal games, has decided to sell his gold medal. At 66, it appears Smith is in need of it financially. The bidding starts at $250k so Smith is definitely shooting for the moon with the initial price. Who knows what kind of market exists for memorabilia like that but judging from the Ponzi scheme above, people aren’t exactly making the best decisions with their cash flow these days.
Still recovering from a left foot injury that almost caused him to retire, Rockets center Yao Ming played 19 minutes in a preseason victory over the Nets. “I want to choose the words ‘not accustomed’ to it instead of ‘don’t like’ it because all of this is for the purpose for me to perform even longer,” Yao said through a translator. Yes Yao, that’s what she said.
The death of Georgia’s mascot UGA VII was tragic last year. Since then, the Bulldogs have been forced to use an interim uh, “bulldog”. But this Saturday they will unveil the newest heir to the throne, UGA VIII. Apparently both the University President and Athletic Director will pass be in attendance to pass the collar on. In other news, a Georgia professor won the Nobel Prize and was given a doggie bone by the University.
