Lack of fishing license costs team over $900,000 tournament prize

To catch a fish anywhere in the United States, you need a license. It’s one of the basic tenets of American law and frankly, one of the easiest to follow. A fishing license in most states run anywhere from $10-$20. Hardly a steep price even for the most frugal of fishermen.

But apparently, it was enough for a crew member of a team that won a Marlin fishing tournament last week. A lie detector test was administered to the winning team after they caught a 883-pound blue Marlin and it was revealed that one member did not own a fishing license. Consequently, the team was stripped of their win and the $912,825 prize.

The boat’s captain was obviously disappointed.

Via Fanhouse:

“We didn’t do anything wrong. But one of our people did. He failed to get a fishing license, but we didn’t know it. He told us he had it. He didn’t. So you take a man for his word, you know? I can’t do anything. They made their decision,” Thomossan said, referring to the Big Rock board of directors.

“They’re taking it away, everything. The fish is disqualified. We’re disqualified. So that’s the end of it. Yeah, wow. That hurts. To have it done it like that…, to have somebody beat me because they caught (a bigger) fish is not so bad, but…,” he said, his voice trailing off without completing his thought.

There are two ways this can be resolved. One involves a fishing pole repeatedly hitting the guilty crew member over the head, and the other, well it can best be described with this picture from Godfather II.
