1 day after the longest match in the history of tennis, American John Isner lost in straight sets to unseeded Thiemo de Bakker at Wimbledon. From the outset of the match, Isner looked visibly tired and physically beaten down. His 6-0 loss in the first set was the first time he had ever been shut out of a set at a Grand Slam event.
He also recorded no aces after having 112 against Mahut in the marathon match. Patrick McEnroe spoke briefly before the match saying Isner had “no skin on his toes” and had them taped up by the trainer.
But whatever Isner lost today, he gained in respect from his opponents, fans, and even people who had never heard of him. He rarely declined an interview request after yesterday’s win and is now, almost a household name.
Given the struggles of American tennis outside of Andy Roddick, Isner may be the new star everyone is looking for. He just might need a few weeks to recover though.
