Hall of Fame Mariners broadcaster Dave Niehaus died at the age of 75 yesterday. Amazingly, since 1977 when the Seattle Mariners first started, he has called 5,284 of their 5,385 games. MLB commissioner Bud Selig added his thoughts yesterday afternoon on the loss, “He was one of the great broadcast voices of our generation, a true gentleman, and a credit to baseball. He was a good friend and I will miss him.”

Three White Sox employees including one rising exec within the organization were indicted on federal charges yesterday after allegedly taking kickbacks from Latin American players over the years. The scheme was by no means elaborate–inflating players bonuses and forcing them to hand part of it back over. However, it was financially beneficial as they pocketed more than $400k in a 3-year span. The exec who is now longer with the organization, David Wilder, was once a close friend and adviser to White Sox GM Ken Williams.

It may not be as extravagant as the Beijing Olympics but the Asian Games is certainly costing the Chinese government an arm and a leg. They’ve spent close to $302 million dollars on security which included ousting some local residents of Guangzhou to prevent any possible disruptions. “The Nanfang Daily reported that displaced residents will be taken to watch the event on the large screens in the plazas or can go see three movies for free”. Wow, not one movie but three for kicking me out of my house. Thanks a bunch China.

The Utah Jazz did it again folks. After trailing most of the night against another Eastern Conference elite team, they stormed back from an 18-point deficit to defeat the Orlando Magic 104-94. This came less than 24 hours after a 22-point comeback against the best team to ever grace a basketball court, the Miami Heat.

Antonio Margarito camp makes fun of trainer 135x95 Sports by the numbers: 11/11/10

The Manny Pacquiao-Antonio Margarito fight Saturday just heated up outside the ring. Fanhouse.com posted a video of several people in Margarito’s camp making fun of Freddie Roach, who has battled Parkinson’s disease for several years. The original video has since been taken down by Fanhouse but several other sites, including Deadspin, posted it yesterday. Margarito has said he would apologize to Roach on Saturday but the trainer doesn’t want any sympathies. “They’ve always been nice to me, but they showed their true colors this time. I don’t need friends like that.”
