In 2004, Mike Danton, who had previously played with the St. Louis Blues and New Jersey Devils, was convicted of conspiracy to commit murder. As the story goes, Danton hired a hitman to kill his agent but the man was actually a police officer. Some five years later he was released from prison and has tried to make his way back into hockey.

During his first game with IFK Ore of the Swedish league, a teammate’s head hit hard off the ice and he began convulsing. Danton, who had learned first aid in prison sprang to action.

Danton dropped to the ice as well, waited for Bengtsson’s jaw to unclench and then shoved his hand into his teammate’s mouth to stop him from choking on his own tongue.

“I have seen seizures before. In prison, druggies would come in off the streets and have withdrawals,” he wrote. “So, when the convulsions did not (stop) after a couple of minutes, I knew something was wrong.”

So yea, there you have it. Prison isn’t just about guys lifting weights, sneaking contraband, fighting off rape, and planning prison guard beatdowns. I blame HBO’s “Oz” for tainting my innocent mind.
