Former Orioles pitcher Mike Flanagan found dead
Mike Flanagan, who won a Cy Young award as a member of the Baltimore Orioles, was found dead Wednesday. Police are investigating the cause of death and have yet to release a statement but WBAL’s Gerry Sandusky said Flanagan was “despondent over what he considered a false perception from a community he loved of his role in the team’s prolonged failure”.
Ouch.
In his 18 seasons in MLB, Flanagan compiled a 167-143, 3.90 ERA, and 1,491 strikeouts. In 1979, Flanagan has his best season with 23 wins en route to the AL Cy Young Award.
After retiring from the game in 1992, Flanagan worked in the Orioles front office. However, in 2008, the club apparently terminated his contract as executive vice president of baseball operations. More recently he worked as a color commentator for Orioles games on the Mid-Atlantic Sports Network.
