A disastrous post-season that included struggling with an undermanned Bucks team and getting swept by the Orlando Magic has cost coach Mike Woodson his job.

Hawks GM Rick Sund released this statement:

“After careful consideration, we have made a difficult decision regarding coach Woodson’s contractual status,” Sund said in a statement. “We’re grateful for Mike’s contributions over the last six years and we want to wish him the very best.”

Woodson held the Hawks coaching gig for 6 years and in that time, the team improved every year. A feat only 7 NBA teams had accomplished in the past.

But when it came to playing the big boys, Woodson’s Hawks consistently had trouble. It didn’t help that he seemed to lose the respect of some of his biggest stars late in the season. Most notably, Joe Johnson who seemed to mentally check out Game 3 of the Magic series.

Woodson will catch on somewhere, more than likely as an assistant coach. He still has Larry Brown ties and a NBA championship as an assistant in his resume. Something many coaches and GMs in the league still covet.
