My Gatorade REPLAY Experience: It’s Not Easy To Get Your Prom Body Back

Cass Anderson

On April 26, 2009 two High Schools reunited on the gridiron to replay a game from 1993 that had resulted in a 7-7 tie. The Easton Area Red Rovers and the Phillipsburg Stateliners met in front of a crowd of 15,000 fans in 100 degree weather, and Phillipsburg Stateliners ultimately walked away the victors of a 27-12 game. This was turned into a documentary television series that sprouted 3 seasons and has now included rematches between hockey squads and basketball teams in addition to the first football matchup. So, how did a group of 30 somethings meet up on the field to relive their days of glory on the football field? Well I learned this one the hard way last week.

At the core of this event was the Gatorade REPLAY tool, an exercise and diet regiment designed to help aging people like myself rediscover their once beloved high school athleticism. Gatorade’s launching this tool on their site for free, to give access to anyone with an internet connection access to the workouts that the athletes used in the 3 seasons of REPLAY the series. The programs: ‘Get Your Prom Body Back,’ ‘Dude, How Much Can You Bench?’ and ‘Zip Up Your Letterman’s Jacket’ are each designed to be completed in under an hour, and are tailored for dude’s like myself who think they never have enough time to hit the gym.

So, as a treat last week the fine people at the Gatorade Sports Science Institute (GSSI) invited me out to sample my choosing of 1 (of the 3) workouts. My nostalgia kicked in and I chose the ‘Get Your Prom Body Back’ routine, because who doesn’t want to relive the awkwardness that was prom?

Now, I’d like to lie and say that I beasted my way through the workout but, as its name implies, I’ve certainly lost my prom body. Firstly, I have to applaud the Gatorade trainers for squeezing out every ounce of strength in this dilapidated blogger’s body. Within mere moments the tortures of this training regiment had me checking the clock and praying time would speed the hell up. The totality of the exercises had made me a believer that if I actually had the will power to stick with it I would see the same results of those athletes in the REPLAY series.

Alas, I ultimately walked out of there a defeated man with jelly in my arms and legs where my muscles were just minutes before. Like the athletes for whom the program was designed, I’d lost touch with the value of a daily training regiment. I was never the best athlete, and now I’m not even a light shade of an athlete, but with the REPLAY tool it seems there’s a chance that I can once again trick people into thinking I am. For that, I’m looking forward to it.
