Sizing up the Top 25: College football – Week 8

Every week on Guyism, we’ll “size up” the competition for the Top 25 in college football. Here are your match-ups and previews for Week 8 of the NCAA season.
#20 Auburn @ #1 LSU
Auburn: (5-2, 3-1 SEC)
LSU: (7-0, 4-0 SEC)
LSU -21
LSU leads the all-time series 24-20-1
Prediction: Even without some of their best players (Tyrann Mathieu, Spencer Ware and Tharold Simon), LSU should roll at home here. They probably won’t cover the spread, they needed honey badger for that. 28-13.
Tennessee @ #2 Alabama
Tennessee: (3-3, 0-3 SEC)
Alabama: (7-0, 4-0 SEC)
Alabama -27.5
Alabama leads the all-time series 47-38-7
Prediction: Yet another exciting SEC game right? Gimme a break. Tennessee is flat out garbage and even Derek Dooley and his fancy pants won’t come keep this one close. Richardson for Heisman! 48-20.
Texas Tech @ #3 Oklahoma
Texas Tech: (4-2, 1-2 Big 12)
Oklahoma: (6-0, 3-0 Big 12)
Oklahoma -25.5
Oklahoma leads the all-time series 13-5
Prediction: With LSU-Alabama coming up in a few weeks, it’s only a matter of time before Oklahoma makes that jump into the top two again. Provided they don’t slip up to the Red Raiders…which they won’t. 35-14.
#4 Oklahoma State @ Missouri
Oklahoma State: (6-0, 3-0 Big 12)
Missouri: (3-3, 1-2 Big 12)
Oklahoma State -7.5
Missouri leads the all-time series 28-22
Prediction: Oklahoma State is rolling right now but probably not getting the type of hype that they deserve. A showdown with their instate rivals in December may be for a BCS berth. They win this week, 31-21.
Air Force @ #5 Boise State
Air Force: (3-3, 0-2 MWC)
Boise State: (6-0, 1-0 MWC)
Boise State -29.5
These two teams have never played
Prediction: Another boring Boise State game…who cares. 54-10.
#6 Wisconsin @ #16 Michigan State
Wisconsin: (6-0, 2-0 Big Ten)
Michigan State: (5-1, 2-0 Big Ten)
Wisconsin -7
Michigan State leads the all-time series 28-21
Prediction: MSU is without defensive end William Gholston this week but it may not better against a heavy running attack from Wisconsin. MSU nipped them last year at home but two years in a row against this squad would be tough. Despite my homerism, I’m going with the Badgers here in a close one, 28-27.
North Carolina @ #7 Clemson
North Carolina: (5-2, 1-2 ACC)
Clemson: (7-0, 4-0 ACC)
Clemson -7
Clemson leads the all-time series 34-19-1
Prediction: Although I think North Carolina is a little better than their record indicates, Clemson has been finding ways to win games this year. They’ll do it again Saturday at home, 24-17.
#25 Washington @ #8 Stanford
Washington: (5-1, 3-0 Pac-12)
Stanford: (6-0, 4-0 Pac-12)
Stanford -20
Washington leads the all-time series 40-37-4
Prediction: Washington will “Suck for Luck” too as they’ll probably get blown out on the road here, 42-24.
#9 Arkansas @ Ole Miss
Arkansas: (5-1, 1-1 SEC)
Ole Miss: (2-4, 0-3 SEC)
Arkansas -14.5
Arkansas leads the all-time series 30-26-1
Prediction: Ole Miss is still looking for that first SEC win…and they’ll get it on Saturday. Upset pick of the year as they party on in The Grove, 30-28.
#10 Oregon @ Colorado
Oregon: (5-1, 3-0 Pac-12)
Colorado: (1-6, 0-3 Pac-12)
Oregon -32.5
Oregon leads the all-time series 8-7
Prediction: No LaMichael James? No problem. Colorado stinks. Oregon rolls 45-10.
#11 Kansas State @ Kansas
Kansas State: (6-0, 3-0 Big 12)
Kansas: (2-4, 0-3 Big 12)
Kansas State -15
Kansas leads the all-time series 65-38-5
Prediction: What an unexciting instate rivalry game. Yawn. Kansas State should be ashamed of themselves if this isn’t a 3-4 score game by halftime. 35-10.
Boston College @ #12 Virginia Tech
Boston College: (1-5, 0-3 ACC)
Virginia Tech: (6-1, 2-1 ACC)
Virginia Tech -21.5
Virginia Tech leads the all-time series 13-6
Prediction: My only question is how this line is only at 21.5. Apparently they haven’t seen enough of Boston College to know that they’re God awful. Tech runs away early, 52-24.
#13 Nebraska @ Minnesota
Nebraska: (5-1, 1-1 Big Ten)
Minnesota: (1-5, 0-2 Big Ten)
Nebraska -26.5
Minnesota leads the all-time series 29-20-2
Prediction: The Golden Gophers are the worst BCS conference team this year. Their performance at Michigan was so beyond putrid that, at times, it looked like players didn’t even want to be on the field. Nebraska wins in easy fashion, 40-10.
#14 South Carolina-BYE
#17 Texas A&M @ Iowa State
A&M: (4-2, 2-1 Big 12)
Iowa State: (3-3, 0-3 Big 12)
A&M: -17.5
A&M leads the all-time series 9-1
Prediction: I’m slightly skeptical about the Aggies these days after some very weird collapses in the 4th quarter. This one will be close, if only, because the game is on the road. 28-24.
#18 Michigan-BYE
Marshall @ #19 Houston
Marshall: (3-4, 2-1 C-USA)
Houston: (6-0, 2-0 C-USA)
Houston -16
The series is tied up at 1-1.
Prediction: When Houston and Marshall get together, there are bound to be some serious consequences. Actually, I have no idea how good either of these two teams are having only seen the Cougars once. I’ll go out on a limb and say they handle this one easy at home, 24-14.
#21 Penn State @ Northwestern
Penn State: (6-1, 3-0 Big Ten)
Northwestern: (2-4, 0-3 Big Ten)
Penn State -3
Penn State leads the all-time series 11-3
Prediction: Penn State has to be the quietest one loss team in the country. Northwestern may not be very good but they seem to give teams trouble on Ryan Field. Calling the upset here as the Wildcats get their first win of the year in the Big Ten, 31-27.
#22 Georgia Tech @ Miami
Georgia Tech: (6-1, 3-1 ACC)
Miami: (3-3, 1-2 ACC)
Miami -3
Georgia Tech leads the all-time series 10-6
Prediction: This is a pick ‘em game with the spread and frankly, I’m not sure why. I realize the Yellow Jackets aren’t world beaters but Miami hasn’t done anything this year worthwhile. I smell something fishy in Vegas. Tech wins but I’m hesitant, 28-21.
#23 Illinois @ Purdue
Illinois: (6-1, 2-1 Big Ten)
Purdue: (3-3, 1-1 Big Ten)
Illinois -6
Illinois leads the all-time series 42-38-6
Prediction: Illinois showed their true colors last week as did their braniac coach Ron Zook who mistakenly went for a touchdown instead of taking the field goal late. Dumb coach, dumb team but they’ll beat a lowly Boilermakers squad this week, 21-17.
#24 Texas-BYE
