Sizing up the Top 25: College football – Week 9

Every week on Guyism, we’ll “size up” the competition for the Top 25 in college football. Here are your match-ups and previews for Week 9 of the NCAA season.
#1 LSU-BYE
#2 Alabama-BYE
Baylor @ #3 Oklahoma State
Baylor: (4-2, 1-2 Big 12)
Oklahoma State: (7-0, 4-0 Big 12)
Oklahoma State -18
Oklahoma State leads the all-timer series 17-12
Prediction: Oklahoma State may not be the third best team in the country but they’re certainly making a case that this season is no fluke. They’ll continue to win for quite some time until their showdown with Oklahoma. As for this game, blowout city, 45-21.
#4 Stanford @ #20 USC
Stanford: (7-0, 5-0 Pac-12)
USC: (7-0, 5-0 Pac-12)
Stanford -8.5
USC leads the all-time series 57-27-3
Prediction: Stanford has been impressive this year but I’m not entirely convinced they’re the world beaters the media is making them out to be. Part of that has to do with Andrew Luck, who’s a legit Heisman candidate. This game will be close, 31-28.
#5 Boise State-BYE
#6 Clemson @ Georgia Tech
Clemson: (8-0, 5-0 ACC)
Georgia Tech: (6-2, 3-2 ACC)
Clemson -4.5
Georgia Tech leads the all-time series 49-25-2
Prediction: Clemson is due to slip because, let’s be honest, that’s what the Tigers do. But I don’t think it comes this week especially after the way the Yellow Jackets played last week. 28-21 Clemson wins.
Washington State @ #7 Oregon
Washington State: (3-4, 1-3 Pac-12)
Oregon: (6-1, 4-0 Pac-12)
Oregon -32.5
Oregon leads the all-time series 43-38-7
Prediction: The only good thing for the Cougars this week is that the GameDay flag doesn’t need to travel to the opposite coast. Oregon in a runaway, 48-14.
#8 Arkansas @ Vanderbilt
Arkansas: (6-1, 2-1 SEC)
Vanderbilt: (4-3, 1-3 SEC)
Arkansas -12.5
Arkansas leads the all-time series 6-2
Prediction: It’s as if every SEC team looks for the Vanderbilt week so they can rest guys. Arkansas 31-21.
#9 Michigan State @ #13 Nebraska
Michigan State: (6-1, 3-0 Big Ten)
Nebraska: (6-1, 2-1 Big Ten)
Nebraska -5.5
Nebraska leads the all-time series 5-0
Prediction: Perhaps the game of the week as two of the powerhouses in the Big Ten meet. In East Lansing, MSU probably takes this one as they have a more well-rounded team but Nebraska is a different team at home. Expect a close game with the home team pulling it out with a field goal 24-21.
#10 Kansas State @ #11 Oklahoma
Oklahoma: (6-1, 3-1 Big 12)
Kansas State: (7-0, 4-0 Big 12)
Oklahoma -13.5
Oklahoma leads the all-time series 70-17-4
Prediction: What a sorry, sorry performance from Oklahoma last week. They’re lucky this is a home game, otherwise, they’d probably get run out of the building. I’ll take Oklahoma, although I don’t do so with any conviction, 34-21.
#12 Wisconsin @ Ohio State
Wisconsin: (6-1, 2-1 Big Ten)
Ohio State: (4-3, 1-2 Big Ten)
Wisconsin -8.5
Ohio State leads the all-time series 53-18-5
Prediction: Unfortunately, this isn’t a good matchup for the Badgers and they’ll lean on Russell Wilson to make plays for them with his feet. On the other side, the Badgers defense got exposed as a very slow defense against MSU. I want to desperately take the Buckeyes with this one, but Wisconsin’s still the better team, 35-21.
#14 South Carolina @ Tennessee
South Carolina: (6-1, 4-1 SEC)
Tennessee: (3-4, 0-4 SEC)
South Carolina -6.5
Tennessee leads the all-time series 22-5-2
Prediction: The line is begging you to take South Carolina and not look back and frankly, I don’t disagree. Cocks over Vols, 24-17.
#15 Virginia Tech @ Duke
Virginia Tech: (7-1, 3-1 ACC)
Duke: (3-4, 1-2 ACC)
Virginia Tech -14
Virginia Tech leads the all-time series 14-7
Prediction: Va. Tech has lost to Duke seven times in their history? How? In other news, the Hokies roll 34-10.
Missouri @ #16 Texas A&M
Missouri: (3-4, 1-3 Big 12)
Texas A&M: (5-2, 3-1 Big 12)
Texas A&M -11
A&M leads the all-time series 7-4
Prediction: I’m just waiting for the Aggies to choke again–something that inevitably happens every week. I’m guessing this time it happens in the third quarter. Missouri in an upset 38-34.
Purdue @ #17 Michigan
Purdue: (4-3, 2-1 Big Ten)
Michigan: (6-1, 2-1 Big Ten)
Michigan -15
Michigan leads the all-time series 42-14
Prediction: Michigan has had two weeks to stew on that MSU loss. Thankfully, Purdue’s in town and Denard Robinson will again revert back to his September Heisman numbers. Michigan 45-21.
Iowa State @ #19 Texas Tech
Iowa State: (3-4, 0-4 Big 12)
Texas Tech: (5-2, 2-2 Big 12)
Texas Tech -17.5
Texas Tech leads the all-time series 7-2
Prediction: Not interested, don’t care. Tech 52-17.
Illinois @ #21 Penn State
Illinois: (6-2, 2-2 Big Ten)
Penn State: (7-1, 4-0 Big Ten)
Penn State -6
Penn State leads the all-time series 14-4
Prediction: It’s snowing in Happy Valley and if you thought Ron Zook was a bad coach in good weather, just wait for the blunders he’ll pull with some snowflakes. Nittany Lions, 20-14.
#22 Georgia @ Florida
Georgia: (5-2, 4-1 SEC)
Florida: (4-3, 2-3 SEC)
Georgia -3
Florida leads the all-time series 46-40-2
Prediction: Gonna go with the Bulldogs in the largest cocktail party, which in my opinion, is the dumbest nickname for a tailgating event. Georgia 31-27.
Colorado @ #23 Arizona State
Colorado: (1-7, 0-4 Pac-12)
Arizona State: (5-2, 3-1 Pac-12)
Arizona State -30.5
Arizona State leads the all-time series 2-0
Prediction: Colorado is one of the worst BCS teams out there and ASU has proved they’re a competitive team this year. 55-17.
#24 Cincinnati-BYE
#25 West Virginia @ Rutgers
West Virginia: (5-2, 2-1 Big East)
Rutgers: (5-2, 1-1 Big East)
West Virginia -7
West Virginia leads the all-time 32-4-2
Prediction: Because Eric LeGrand is leading Rutgers on the field this week, I sincerely want to pick them purely because I’m a softie. But I just can’t in good conscience. Mountaineers with their foot out the door in the Big East mercilessly beat on Rutgers, 34-20.
