NHL All-Star game will feature two captains picking teams
Regardless of your feelings on the NHL or hockey in general, you have to give them credit for shaking up their all-star game. What usually amounts to an exhibition of 15-20 goals combined with seemingly nothing on the line has now turned into a battle at the local pond.
The NHL announced yesterday that the game will now feature two captains picking their teams.
A source confirmed Tuesday that two captains will choose players from either conference to make up the teams for the 2011 game in Carolina. Since 2003, the all-star game has been contested between representatives from the Eastern Conference and Western Conference.
The idea was formulated by NHL vice-president Brendan Shanahan, who consulted with former player Rob Blake and the NHL Players’ Association. Shanahan outlined the change during the GM meetings on Tuesday but was reluctant to discuss it with the media afterwards.
Yes, it’s very likely that the two captains will be Alex Ovechkin and Sidney Crosby, and in some ways, it’s only fitting. But it will be very interesting to see if the captains have more allegiance to their hometown teams in making their picks as opposed to actually winning the game.
