Nigerian president suspends soccer team
Nigeria is supposed to be an international power in soccer. Or at least that’s what the fans and apparently the president believes. After a rather disappointing World Cup, which saw them only go 0-2-1, Nigerian president Goodluck Jonathan suspended the team from international competition for two years.
Ima Niboro, a spokesman for President Goodluck Jonathan, made the announcement Wednesday, saying the ban would enable the country to reorganize its football administration.
Niboro said that all funding for the World Cup squad, including the hiring of Swedish coach Lars Lagerback, would be investigated.
I wanted to take this story seriously…I really did. But once I saw the name “Goodluck Jonathan”, I nearly collapsed in laughter. Mr. Goodluck sir, I’m guessing your country has more daunting problems than the success of your soccer team.
In fact, if you could be of any help with your countrymen’s email spam campaign, I’m sure there are a plethora of Americans who would be more than willing to help you in the soccer department. I’ll start things off myself with a little piece of advice.
Don’t hire a foreign coach 4 months before the start of the World Cup. A recipe for disaster as you probably could tell. Just ask the English.
