Oil Can Boyd admits to cocaine use while pitching
Oil Can Boyd, who pitched for 10 years in the Major Leagues, has admitted to using cocaine while on the mound. He went so far as saying that 2/3 of the time he was called on to pitch, he was high as a kite. Boyd also claims he could have won twice as many games had it not been for the white stuff.
You don’t say? Cocaine can have long-lasting effects?
“Oh yeah, at every ballpark,’’ he said. “There wasn’t one ballpark that I probably didn’t stay up all night, until four or five in the morning, and the same thing is still in your system. It’s not like you have time to go do it while in the game, which I had done that.
“Some of the best games I’ve ever, ever pitched in the major leagues I stayed up all night; I’d say two-thirds of them,’’ said Boyd. “If I had went to bed, I would have won 150 ballgames in the time span that I played. I feel like my career was cut short for a lot of reasons, but I wasn’t doing anything that hundreds of ballplayers weren’t doing at the time; because that’s how I learned it.
Uppers were very popular with players in the 70s, 80s and 90s so Boyd’s admission isn’t that shocking. Several clubhouses even had greenies in their coffee to give guys an extra boost. Will that age now be known as the “Amphetamine Era.” Doubtful.
Unfortunately, the average fan views performance enhancing drugs as steroids and HGH. Stimulants, like cocaine and greenies take a back seat.
Doesn’t say much about the perceived intelligence of baseball fans.
