4192 is one of the most sacred numbers not only in baseball history, but in sports history. It represents a lifetime of hard work albeit from a man in Pete Rose who regularly tried to make money doing the exact opposite.

The record took a bit of a hit when Rose admitted that he indeed bet on baseball. Not because his betting had any direct affect on the record itself but because Rose’s name was synonymous with cheating.

Which brings us to the 1985 Pete Rose Corked bat story on Deadspin.

Rose had been adamant before that he NEVER used a corked bat. He went so far as saying this:

“Go up to Steve Wolter and get that 4192 bat,” Rose said in 2004. “Take it to an examiner and see if there’s any cork in it. I guarantee you there won’t be.

“If somebody has a corked bat that has my name on it, bring it on down.”

Well, somebody did get that bat and x-rayed it. Needless to say, we can chalk up yet another inch on Pete Rose’s growing nose.

I’m not doing the story justice by summarizing it in less than 200 words so do yourself a favor and give it a read.

If your image of Rose was bad before, this will only validate it. But if for some strange reason you held him in high regard, then by God, get yourself to a methadone clinic ASAP.

What'd you think of this?
