Cheerleaders are there to pump up a crowd, perhaps even provide a spark for the team when they’re down. But evidently, the folks in Edmonton don’t feel that way about the upcoming Oilers cheerleading squad.

An online petition was started today by angry, irate women who believe that “it isn’t appropriate for a Canadian hockey team to have this kind of entertainment”. I’m sorry, what’s that? I can’t hear you from high atop your pedestal.

You can read the entire petition here which of course includes the holier than though “objectification of women” line.

Here is just a small sample of comments from the 131 signees. Yes, I said 131, this is obviously a hot topic in little ‘ol Alberta.

This isn’t the WWE or the NFL, keep hockey sacred!!!

Leave hockey cheerleaders to American teams. Oilers game don’t need MORE sex appeal (not to mention distraction – can you say ‘puck in the face!’?) Cheerleading has no place in hockey.

Sexist in the extreme, Now the Oilers are providing young pretty girl for their young guns?

If the Oilers go through with this, I swear I will NEVER buy a ticket AGAIN!!!
