Dave Wannstedt 214x214 Pitt fires Dave Wannstedt

Dave Wannstedt has been fired by the Pitt Panthers according to the post-gazette. The team went 7-5 this year and is slated to play in the BBVA Compass Bowl on Jan. 8th. Needless to say, Wannstedt won’t be at the helm for the game.

Pitt football coach Dave Wannstedt has been fired, defensive line coach Greg Gattuso told the Post-Gazette today. Gattuso said the assistant coaches were informed this afternoon.

Pitt athletic director Steve Pederson could not be immediately reached for comment this afternoon, but he declined to comment through a university spokesman Monday night when he was asked a series of questions by the Post-Gazette about Wannstedt’s future. Those questions included, “Will Dave be the coach next year?” and, “When will you meet with him, before the bowl game or after the bowl game?”

Wannstedt never got off on the right foot with the Panthers. Even though he sported a 42-31 record, in his first year, he led them to a losing season despite inheriting a team that went to the Fiesta Bowl the year prior. After that, it was disappointment after disappointment including an embarrassing 3-0 loss in the Sun Bowl to Oregon State two years ago. The school expected more Big East championships out of Wannstedt and unfortunately he was never able to produce. Ultimately, that alone, was his downfall.
