Rashard Mendenhall clarifies his stance on Osama Bin Laden in blog
Rashard Mendenhall promised that he would clarify his tweets on Bin Laden, 9/11 and today, he came through. In case you’ve been under a rock the last few days, Rashard Mendenhall has quickly become public enemy number one after a flurry of tweets questioning 9/11 and Bin Laden’s role in it.
Mendenhall attempted to pacify the masses with a blog post this morning (via @darrenrovell).
This controversial statement was something I said in response to the amount of joy I saw in the event of a murder. I don’t believe that this is an issue of politics or American pride; but one of religion, morality, and human ethics. In the bible, Ezekiel 33:11 states, “Say to them, ‘As surely as I live, declares the Sovereign LORD, I take no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but rather that they turn from their ways and live. Turn! Turn from your evil ways!…”. I wasn’t questioning Bin Laden’s evil acts. I believe that he will have to face God for what he has done. I was reflecting on our own hypocrisy. During 9/11 we watched in horror as parts of the world celebrated death on our soil. Earlier this week, parts of the world watched us in horror celebrating a man’s death.
I give credit to Mendenhall for staying true to his word and trying to further explain his opinions on Bin Laden. As I’ve said before, if you’re going to take a stance on something as sensitive as that, 140 characters probably isn’t the right outlet for you.
That said, I still vehemently disagree with the insinuation that the celebration of Osama Bin Laden’s death compares to those around the world on 9/11. In fact, I’ll go as far as saying it’s as ignorant as those who believe our government had a hand in those devastating terrorist attacks.
As for me, I’ll forget about this Rashard Mendenhall stuff in a week because I have serious ADD. For his sake, he better hope Pittsburgh fans suffer from the same disorder. Otherwise, it could be a long season for him. That is, if there’s a season at all.
