Roger Clemens 135x95 Roger Clemens may return to professional baseball...in Puerto Rico?

Just when you thought you had heard the last of Roger Clemens, the 49-year old is making a comeback. If you recall, it was just two short months ago when Clemens escaped what was undoubtedly a slam-dunk perjury sentence when prosecutors accidentally presented improper evidence. The judge in the case quickly declared a mistrial and Clemens was free…temporarily that is.

Now, with some time on his hands, Clemens is exploring a return to professional baseball…in Puerto Rico.

The 49-year-old Rocket has been a visible presence in Puerto Rico where his oldest son, Koby, is playing winter ball with Indios de Mayaguez. Earlier this week, El Nuevo Dia quoted an unnamed Indios player saying the elder Clemens “wants to pitch, that’s 100% sure.” Friday, a new Nuevo Dia report quotes Indios owner Daniel Aquino on the record and Aquino was not shy about welcoming another un-retirement by the seven-time Cy Young winner.

“First, there hasn’t been any overtures on his part,” Aquino told Nuevo Dia. “He hasn’t spoken with us. We haven’t entered into anything. I hear he’s in magnificent shape. But first he would have to express that he wants to play. It’s Roger’s decision. It’s a possibility, but he hasn’t said anything. It’s Roger’s decision to make.”

Both father and son Clemens have been working out with the Indios. The elder Clemens has thrown bullpen sessions and sported an Indios jersey in one photo.

If the Indios are getting the Clemens of old with “B12 shots and lidocaine” in tow, then by all means, they should take a run at this. But more than likely, what they’re getting is a 49-year old has-been who will just embarrass his son.

Personally, I hope he goes through with it, if only because he’ll provide the blogosphere with excellent fodder in his quest to become the next Kenny Powers.
