Sports by the numbers: 10/18/10
Guyism’s daily look at what’s hot in the world of sports.
With just over 5 minutes left to play in the Rutgers-Army game Saturday, a routine kickoff and tackle proved to be disastrous for Eric LeGrand. The defensive tackle laid motionless on the turf for several minutes while team doctors attended to him. After surgery to stabilize his spine, the news turned out to be grim. LeGrand was paralyzed from the neck down. Rutgers coach Greg Schiano offered these inspiring words to both his teams and the media “We’re going to believe, Eric LeGrand is going to walk onto that field with us. That’s what we believe”. We hope so too coach.
The Detroit Lions reached yet another milestone in their putrid history yesterday. With the loss to the Giants, the Motown kitties have now lost 24 straight on the road. And while a majority of those games have been blowouts, it’s fair to say the Lions had a chance in this one. But 11 penalties for 91 yards in a hostile environment just isn’t going to cut it.
Oregon may sit atop the AP and Coaches Poll right now, but in the rankings that really matter, the Oklahoma Sooners are #1. The Boise State Broncos, who many believe will finish the season undefeated, are #3. With the much tougher schedule for other teams it’s only a matter of time before they are leap frogged. It would behoove them to root for losses across the board and hope that the computers churn out numbers in their favor.
The most corrupt sports organization on the planet? IOC? NCAA? Nope, how about FIFA. Reynald Temarii, FIFA executive committee member admitted that he spoke to undercover reporters about selling his vote for future World Cup host cities. The London Sunday Times filmed him saying he wanted 2.3 million dollars in exchange for a tally in America’s favor. No money exchanged hands but enough was said to implicate Temarii.
With less than 90 seconds left, and the Jets trailing by 3 in Denver, they needed a miracle. Facing a 4th and 6, Sanchez delivered a Hail Mary down the sidelines and was rewarded with a questionable pass interference call. Yes, Renaldo Hill did grab the facemask of Santonio Holmes. But most would argue that it had little or nothing to do with the actual play. It’s a wonder why teams don’t do this
It had been more than eight years since Rocco Mediate had won on the PGA tour. But a miraculous stretch that included holing out for eagle four days in a row was just enough to get Mediate that win he has been long looking for. The 47-year old, who has fought back problems most of his career has had close calls including a duel with Tiger Woods at the 2008 U.S. Open. But alas, he finally stands again in the winners circle.
