It wasn’t that long ago that Santonio Holmes caught the game winning touchdown and was MVP for the Steelers in Super Bowl XLIII.

Fast forward a year and some change later and throw in an assault arrest and Holmes quickly became persona non-grata in Pittsburgh. Yesterday, the Steelers brass apparently had enough and traded him to the Jets for a fifth-round draft pick.

Holmes and his lawyer have vehemently protested the assault accusation and went even as far as saying they had evidence that would exonerate him. But the Steelers, who have been embroiled in off-season controversy with Holmes and more explicitly quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, had enough. Big Ben will more than likely dodge sexual assault charges but both episodes have left a stain on the organization as a whole. Art Rooney, the Steelers team president has said in the past that he was disappointed in Holmes action. Whether or not he was also “disappointed” in Roethlisberger’s antics are beyond me. Although, as is the case 99% of the time, the quarterback manages to keep his jersey clean.
