Gillette Stadium 135x95 Scoreboard malfunction at Gillette Stadium will not be investigated by NFL

Billy Cundiff follows a specific routine when it comes to kicking field goals. A routine that involves looking at the scoreboard to find out which down it is before going through his motions. On Sunday before his ill-fated attempt, his routine was altered because the Gillette Stadium scoreboard displayed the incorrect down and distance.

The whole scenario was described in detail by Cundiff to Deadspin:

Then, suddenly, chaos on the sidelines. Coaches were screaming—from the opposite end of the field to where Cundiff was thinking his third-down pre-kick kicker thoughts—for the field-goal unit. The play clock was ticking and Cundiff, as per normal, was back from the sideline and farther from the line of scrimmage than his teammates. As he was not expecting to go in yet, he had to run to get into position for a game-tying kick.

Cundiff told me he initially thought he was at fault, that he had looked at the scoreboard too early, before the down number had been changed. In fact, the Gillette Stadium scoreboard was off by a down.

Today, the Baltimore Sun reports the NFL is NOT looking into the situation, nor have they been requested to by the Ravens. When asked about the scoreboard malfunction, Cundiff’s teammate, Ray Rice, seemed unaware of the issue, telling Sports Illustrated’s Jimmy Traina, “I honestly can’t tell you anything about that…I don’t really know anything about that situation…I didn’t see it.”

Seems this may have been much ado about nothing. But, frankly, anytime Bill Belichick is involved, you’re almost obligated to take a second look.

What'd you think of this?
