Serena Williams’ tearful return at Wimbledon
Serena Williams defeated Aravane Rezai in three sets in an emotional first round match at Wimbledon today. After winning at the All-England Club in 2010, Williams has faced numerous medical problems in the last year. A terrible foot injury sidelined her for months and in the process, she developed a serious pulmonary embolism. On top of that, she dealt with a 40-year old male stalker and a Twitter controversy involving a racy photo. So needless to say, it’s been a rough year for the tennis star and it showed in her post-match interview today.
I’ve taken my fair share of pot shots at Serena over the years, but truthfully, I’m a big fan. She plays hard, she plays with a lot of heart, and she actually enjoys playing for the fans. Not much else you can ask for out of a superstar athlete. She probably won’t win this year at Wimbledon–in fact, she may not even get get out of the next round. But women’s tennis needed her vibrant personality, if only to remind the American viewership that there are indeed U.S. born players who are still successful in the sport.
