Sizing up the Top 25: College football – Week 5

Every week on Guyism, we’ll “size up” the competition for the Top 25 in college football. Here are your match-ups and previews for Week 5 of the NCAA season.
Kentucky: (2-2, 0-1 SEC)
LSU: (4-0, 1-0 SEC)
Kentucky -27.5
LSU leads the all-time series 38-16-1
Prediction: I was told last week that LSU has four NFL ready players…in the secondary. Wow. LSU wins easy 40-7.
Ball State @ #2 Oklahoma
Ball State: (3-1, 1-0 MAC)
Oklahoma: (3-0, 1-0 Big 12)
Oklahoma -39
The two teams have never played
Prediction: My prediction? Pain for Ball State, 52-13.
#3 Alabama @ #12 Florida
Alabama: (4-0, 1-0 SEC)
Florida: (4-0, 2-0 SEC)
Alabama -6
Alabama leads the all-time series 21-14
Prediction: If LSU is the best team in the nation, than Alabama isn’t far behind. Despite the road game, I see Alabama winning by a touchdown or so, 27-20.
Nevada @ #4 Boise State
Nevada: (1-2, 1-0 WAC)
Boise State: (3-0, 0-0 MWC)
Boise State -29
Boise State leads the all-time series 24-13
Prediction: Boise State’s Mickey Mouse schedule begins this weekend with WAC Titans, Nevada. Uh, yea, 38-17.
#5 Oklahoma State-BYE
UCLA @ #6 Stanford
UCLA: (2-2, 1-0 Pac-12)
Stanford: (3-0, 1-0 Pac-12)
Stanford -22.5
UCLA leads the all-time series 45-33-3
Prediction: It’ll come down to Stanford and Oregon for the Pac-12 title. UCLA isn’t even on the radar. 35-21.
#8 Nebraska @ #7 Wisconsin
Nebraska: (4-0, 0-0 Big Ten)
Wisconsin: (4-0, 0-0 Big Ten)
Wisconsin -7
Nebraska leads the all-time series 3-2
Prediction: Welcome to your first game in the BigTen Nebraska. A league where Bret Bielema beats up on small conference schools at home nd is given absurdly high rankings. I’d like to see the Badgers lose, but they’re actually a good team at home. 28-24.
#9 Oregon-BYE
Auburn @ #10 South Carolina
Auburn: (3-1, 1-0 SEC)
South Carolina: (4-0, 2-0 SEC)
South Carolina -10.5
Auburn leads the all-time series 8-1-1
Prediction: This is where things are going to start getting dicey for Auburn. They’ve looked shaky thus far this season and it aint getting easier in the SEC. They lose a close one, 30-27.
#13 Clemson @ #11 Virginia Tech
Clemson: (4-0, 1-0 ACC)
Virginia Tech: (4-0, 0-0 ACC)
Virginia Tech -7
Clemson leads the all-time series 17-12-1
Prediction: As much as I’d like to pick Clemson here, this is their third difficult game in a row. Slight edge to the Hokies at home, 34-27.
#14 Texas A&M @ #18 Arkansas
Texas A&M: (2-1, 0-1 Big 12)
Arkansas: (3-1, 0-1 SEC)
Texas A&M -3
Arkansas leads the all-time series 40-24-3
Prediction: Well, these two teams will be playing a lot more in the next few years. But for this week, we’re going with the home Hogs, 31-21.
#15 Baylor @ Kansas State
Baylor: (3-0, 0-0 Big 12)
Kansas State: (3-0, 0-0 Big 12)
Baylor -3
Kansas State leads the all-time series 6-2
Prediction: I haven’t seen Kansas State play this year so this is a blind pick. Wildcats win, 20-17.
#17 Texas @ Iowa State
Texas: (3-0, 0-0 Big 12)
Iowa State: (3-0, 0-0 Big 12)
Texas -9
Texas leads the all-time series 7-1
Prediction: Iowa State isn’t as bad as people think and Texas certainly isn’t worthy of that 17 ranking. I’m going go with the Cyclones here, 27-23.
Minnesota @ #19 Michigan
Minnesota: (1-3, 0-0 Big Ten)
Michigan: (4-0, 0-0 Big Ten)
Michigan -19.5
Michigan leads the all-time series 70-24-3
Prediction: By my recollection, the Gophers have only won the “Little Brown Jug” like twice in the last 50 years. The trophy will not change hands Saturday. Wolverines in a runaway 52-17.
SMU @ #20 TCU
SMU: (3-1, 2-0 C-USA)
TCU: (3-1, 1-0 MWC)
TCU -13.5
TCU leads the all-time series 44-39-7
Prediction: Unless Eric Dickerson and the Pony Express are walking through that door, I don’t see the Mustangs winning. TCU 34-21.
#21 Georgia Tech @ NC State
Georgia Tech: (4-0, 1-0 ACC)
NC State: (2-2, 0-1 ACC)
Georgia Tech -6
Georgia Tech leads the all-time series 17-10
Prediction: I’m biased, I’m a secret Wolfpack fan. At home, I give them the edge, 28-24.
Bowling Green @ #22 West Virginia
Bowling Green: (3-1, 1-0 MAC)
West Virginia: (3-1, 0-0 Big East)
West Virginia -21
West Virginia leads the all-time series 2-0
Prediction: Unrelated, West Virginia shouldn’t be playing the Big East. The SEC or ACC needs to pick them up. In related news, West Virginia recovers from the GameDay loss in a big way, 44-7.
#23 Florida State-BYE
Northwestern @ #24 Illinois
Northwestern: (2-1, 0-0 Big Ten)
Illinois: (4-0, 0-0 Big Ten)
Illinois -7
Illinois leads the all-time series 53-46-5
Prediction: Illinois is the worst 4-0 team in the country. Should have lost to Western last week. That said, Northwestern is just blah. Fighting Illini win 24-17.
Oregon State @ #25 Arizona State
Oregon State: (0-3, 0-1 Pac-12)
Arizona State: (3-1, 1-0 Pac-12)
Arizona State -17.5
Arizona State leads the all-time series 24-12-1
Prediction: If you’re feeling down as a team and you don’t think things are going well, then Oregon State is the perfect team to be playing. Sun Devils in a runaway, 40-21.
