Sky news soccer reporter Andy Gray fired for sexist comments
Sky News reporter Andy Gray, who has been the face of soccer coverage for the network for more than 20 years, was fired for sexist comments he made about a female official.
The comments, which were made when Gray thought his microphone was off, came during a pre-game broadcast between Wolves and Liverpool Saturday.
“Andy Gray’s contract has been terminated for unacceptable behavior,” Sky Sports managing director Barney Francis said Tuesday. “After issuing a warning yesterday, we have no hesitation in taking this action after becoming aware of new information today.”
Francis was referring to footage that appears to show Gray making a suggestive comment and gesture toward Sky Sports colleague Charlotte Jackson in the studio.
Below is audio of the conversation that took place between Gray and broadcast colleague Richard Keys.
How dare Gray say that women don’t have an equal place in sports. Here in America, we have cheerleaders and dance team members who do an admirable job of keeping fans happy during sporting events. At the very least, they distract attention away from the abysmal job the officials are doing. And in the end, on the pitch, that makes them equals.
