Guyism’s daily look at what’s hot in the world of sports.
Yesterday, a fishy recruiting story involving Auburn quarterback Cam Newton surfaced. Mississippi State officials told the SEC about a man representing Newton asking for a six-figure payment. Rumors are flying that Newton’s father’s church received $200,000 dollars from an Auburn booster. The Heisman front-runner is still eligible to play according to coach Gene Chizik, but this will get much worse for the Tigers in the next week or so.
Former Cincinnati Reds and Detroit Tigers manager Sparky Anderson passed away yesterday, he was 76 years old. Sparky won three World Series titles as a manager, two with the infamous “Big Red Machine”. He was also the first person to win a title with a team from both leagues. When he retired, the Hall of Famer was third on the all-time wins list with 2,194. More than fifteen years later, he still sits sixth on the list. Easily, one of the greatest managers of baseball’s modern era.
James Harrison was fined again by the NFL and had to answer in person to Roger Goodell for hitting a defenseless Drew Brees last Sunday. Harrison is understandably pissed about the situation and spoke out yesterday, “The amount of money is becoming an issue,” Harrison said Thursday. “The fines that they issued to me, two of them weren’t even called penalties. I don’t even know what to say anymore.”
Despite trailing most of the game, Virginia Tech came roaring back in the 4th quarter to defeat Georgia Tech 28-21. Somewhere, in Boise, Idaho, Broncos fans breathed a huge sigh of relief. With 2:23 to play, David Wilson returned a kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown to cap the win.
A radio host in New Orleans was so sure about his sources regarding the Drew Brees injury that he threw a wild number out there to reflect how he felt. He said “I’m 100 thousand-trillion-million percent sure”. Might as well have gone with a zillion sir, rolls off the tongue just a bit better.
