Guyism’s daily look at what’s hot in the world of sports.
The #1 ranked UCONN women had their winning streak in jeopardy last night against Baylor. Leading by fifteen early in the half, the Huskies suddenly found themselves in a dog fight with only a few seconds remaining. Baylor did get off a shot, however, it came after the buzzer and Connecticut escaped with a 65-64 victory–their 80th in a row.
Doug Barron, the first player to be suspended under the new PGA drug policy, shot a 74 at Q school yesterday. Barron tested positive for testosterone in 2009, but in September he was granted a therapeutic use exemption. At 41-years old, he’s looking to make his way back on tour after the lengthy absence. “I really feel like I’m going to make it past second stage and get my playing card for 2011. Then I will be nervous on the first tee next year.”
The first big win of the CBB season belongs to OSU, who went into the swamp and delivered a beating on the Gators. OSU played near perfect basketball and outscored Florida 55-34 in the second half to defeat the 10th ranked team in the nation. Billy Donovan was more than impressed with his opposition’s performance saying, “Ohio State has a better chance of being a better team this year than they did a year ago”. Stunning if true.
It’s been quite some time since there’s been any worthwhile Cam Newton news, so naturally, the U.S. government felt the need to step in. The FBI met with John Bond, the former Mississippi State quarterback who started this whole fiasco. According to his lawyer, he cannot comment because of the ongoing investigation. So, yea, I guess that’s your update. Here’s mine: Cam Newton took money, and a whole lot of it to go to Auburn. You don’t need a rocket scientist to see it.
Winter months are supposed to be filled with football and basketball news, but baseball for some reason, tries their damndest to inject themselves into conversation. Yesterday, All-Star second baseman Dan Uggla was traded from the Marlins to the Braves for Omar Infante and Mike Dunn. Uggla, who made $7.8 million dollars this past season will be a free agent after 2011.
