In a matter of 24 hours, the tennis world got flipped upside down. Australian Open favorite Rafael Nadal lost in straight sets and got injured against David Ferrer and then last night, world #3 Novak Djokovic stunned everyone by also beating Roger Federer in straight sets. This will be the first time in three years that a Grand Slam final will not include the big two.

It was only a matter of time before Jimmer Fredette became a household name. The BYU star dropped 43 points on the San Diego State Aztecs last night en route 71-58 win. It was the Aztecs first loss of the season. But the story was Jimmer, as most of the country had only heard rumors of his offensive prowess. His 43 points came on 14-24 shooting including 5-8 from beyond the arc and 10-11 from the charity stripe. Now, that’s efficient.

NASCAR announced a new points system that is supposed to be easier for fans to follow. Here’s the jist: drivers will be awarded 43 points for first place, 42 for second and one point less for every following position down to last. The winner will receive three bonus points with one bonus point awarded for leading a lap and one for leading the most laps. The winner will receive a minimum of 47 points and a maximum of 48. Second will receive a minimum of 42 points and a maximum of 44. Wow, that won’t confuse the fans or anything

Providence 135x95 Sports by the numbers: 1/27/11

Providence had gone 12 years without consecutive victories over ranked until last night. Earlier in the week, Providence had defeated 19th ranked Louisville and then yesterday, Providence dropped an absolute stunner on the 8th ranked Villanova Wildcats. Not only did they handle Villanova, they did so in impressive fashion winning 83-68. Had the Friars started off their Big East campaign with two wins and not six straight losses, who knows where they’d be right now.
