Sports by the numbers: 12/9/10
Guyism’s daily look at what’s hot in the world of sports.
As we told you yesterday, Urban Meyer resigned his position as head coach of the Florida Gators. Meyer leaves with two national championships in six years and an incredible .810 winning percentage. “At the end of the day, I’m very convinced that you’re going to be judged on how you are as a husband and as a father and not on how many bowl games we won”.
Evidently, some baseball teams must have more money than anyone previously thought. Former Rays outfielder Carl Crawford signed a 7-year, $142 million dollar deal with the Boston Red Sox late last night. The deal is not complete until a physical is done, but for all intents and purposes the Sox just landed the biggest position player in this year’s free agency.
Coach K moved into 3rd all-time in wins for college basketball with a 83-48 victory over Bradley last night. But things aren’t all peaches ‘n cream at Cameroon Indoor Stadium. Freshman phenom Kyrie Irving is out indefinitely with an injured toe on his right foot. It does not appear to be broken but ligament damage at this point could be even worse for Irving.
For the first seven minutes of the Oakland-Illinois game yesterday, the players used a women’s basketball. Suffice to say that the referees weren’t exactly at the top of their game. And for those that say there’s not a big difference, well trust me, there is. A men’s ball is one inch larger in circumference and weights two ounces more.
Things just got very interesting for the Kansas City Chiefs this weekend. In arguably one of their biggest games in recent memory, they may be without starting quarterback Matt Cassel who underwent emergency appendectomy yesterday. Though Cassel has not been ruled out entirely, it would be somewhat of a minor miracle if he was able to suit up Sunday.
