Sports by the numbers: 1/4/11
Guyism’s daily look at what’s hot in the world of sports.
Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck finished with 287 yards and 4 touchdowns as the Cardinals stomped Virginia Tech in the Orange Bowl last night. Luck, whose future remains uncertain was near perfect all game long. The only question that now remains for the quarterback and his coach is, now what? Jim Harbaugh is expected to either make a jump to the pros or head back to his alma mater, Michigan while Luck is expected to be the #1 pick in the 2011 NFL draft.
The biggest soap opera in sports continues its merry ways as Kobe Bryant and Phil Jackson trade barbs in the media yet again. Stop us if you’ve heard that one before. Phil says Kobe has been hogging the ball too much, taking too many shots while Kobe says Phil’s zen-stuff is b.s. Frankly, both of them are right and I’m surprised they’ve played this card so early. This usually occurs somewhere right before the playoffs.
In an effort to hold onto some of their core players, the Colorado Rockies are certainly willing to spend more than their fair share of cash. That probably explains giving outfielder Carlos Gonzalez a 7-year, $80 million dollar contract yesterday. “It’s a blessing for me to have this contract at such a young age,” he added. That’s code for, “damn, I’m one rich mofo right now”.
Rarely will we hit college basketball so early in the season but last night, St. John’s pulled off a huge upset beating the 13th ranked Georgetown in Big East action 61-58. The Red Storm had been playing well this season but had lost 14 straight to ranked teams before last night’s surprising win.
