Sports by the numbers: 9/17/10
Guyism’s daily look at what’s hot in the world of sports.
The fine handed down to Julius Peppers of the Chicago Bears for his hit on Matthew Stafford last weekend. From most fans’ vantage point, the sack looked entirely clean–but upon replay, Peppers did make contact with Stafford’s head on his way to strip the ball. Certainly not an egregious hit and one the NFL probably should have just ignored.
Udonis Haslem’s 2008 Mercedes valued at more than 100k was returned to him after prosecutors could not find sufficient evidence to charge him in a felony marijuana arrest last month. When Haslem was stopped, the other passenger in the vehicle claimed possession of the drugs. Upon further investigation it was revealed that Haslem’s fingerprints were not found on the drugs or any of the paraphernalia in question.
USA national swimming coach Mark Schubert was given a 60-day leave of absence yesterday. The punishment had nothing to do with the current coach-sex scandal that has rocked the national swimming organization but rather Schubert’s “unprofessional” behavior towards others.
Though the Lions have gone 2-30 the last two years, fans are still coming out in droves. As of Friday morning, the Lions had less than 2,000 tickets remaining for Sunday’s opener. They were given an extension to 1pm today to avoid a local blackout.
The Anti-Defamation League has offered a $1,000 reward for the person or persons responsible for defacing the mural of the Sacramento Kings’ Omri Casspi with a swastika. Casspi, who is of Jewish descent is the only player from Israel in the NBA. The defacing comes on the same day as Yom Kippur.

After Chris Rainey was arrested and subsequently booted off the team earlier this week, questions are starting to arise about Meyer’s handle on the program. Tim Tebow may have kept his nose clean in Gator country, but it appears others in the program aren’t as interested.
Throughout his messy divorce over the last year, outrageous numbers have been thrown around with regards to Elin Nordegren’s monetary stake. One website in particular repeatedly said that she had a deal for over 700 million dollars. While nobody is sure of the exact amount, that one was deemed preposterous by both Woods and Nordegren respectively. What we do know is that Woods’ gets to keep his 2.4 million dollar home in Orlando now. A small consolation.
