Steve Alford may have been a hell of a player at Indiana, but as a coach, he hasn’t exactly reached the potential of former mentor Bobby Knight.
After leaving the Iowa Hawkeyes a few years back, Alford decided to take a job with the University of New Mexico. He has been mired in relative obscurity since.
That is until this incident over the weekend with BYU player Jonathan Tavernari at the end of the game.
Hard to really make out how the incident started but its very apparent that Steve Alford did indeed call Tavernari an a–hole.
If this was the first time Alford was a prick, you might let this incident slide. Tavernari certainly didn’t look innocent in this exchange.
But Alford isn’t exactly squeaky clean. A few years back while coaching Iowa, he taunted and ridiculed MSU guard Shannon Brown with this flex pose. The back story happened several weeks earlier when MSU had destroyed Iowa in East Lansing. After a huge play on a fast break, Brown flexed for the student section. Apparently Alford didn’t take too kindly and thus the picture below.

All in all, a further indictment of Alford’s character. Maybe he has a bit more Bob Knight in him than everybody thought.
