Steve Bartman had to hide at a security guard’s house
Catching Hell, a documentary about Chicago Cubs fan Steve Bartman will air tonight on ESPN as part of their 30 For 30 series. Thus far, the series has produced some real gems including The Two Escobars, Pony Excess, and June 17th, 1994.
Tonight’s episode may be the most anticipated of the entire series as it focuses on a fan who desperately wants to be forgotten, Steve Bartman. Eight years ago, Bartman sat in left field at Wrigley Field during Game 6 of the 2003 NLCS and reached for a foul ball down that came into the stands–preventing outfielder Moises Alou from catching it. The subsequent reaction from Alou as well as the fans displeasure focused on Bartman, despite many others going for the ball.
Filmmaker Alex Gibney wanted to spotlight the aftermath of the incident, specifically that night and following morning. Today, he went on The Dan Patrick Show and briefly told one story of a female security guard that took Bartman home to her apartment.
