Steve Williams steals the spotlight from Adam Scott
Steve Williams was certainly a glory hog after Adam Scott’s win at Bridgestone yesterday. Tiger Woods’ former caddie told David Feherty after the match that the win was the best of his life.
Williams was on Woods’ bag for 72 wins and 13 majors. So, needless to say, a lot of people felt Williams was rubbing salt in an old wound with the quote. Here’s what golf analyst Paul Azinger had to say on his Twitter page immediately following Wiiliams lengthy interview with the press.
Steve Williams breaks the unwritten caddy rule, by talking to the press. Most don’t, a few do at times when appropriate.
I think CBS did the right thing trying to get Steve W interview. That he accepted? Well he’s clearly ticked at Tiger #butbestweekever?
Undoubtedly, there were people who sided with Williams because they felt he was dealt a bad hand. I was one of them. I felt Stevie was treated rather poorly considering his loyalty to Tiger. And aside from that, as an employee, he needed to know if/when he was working. Something Woods never clearly communicated to him.
But the Williams quote and subsequent interview with the press was in poor taste. Especially since it took the spotlight away from the man who did all the heavy lifting, Adam Scott. Just take a look at how 12 major publications treated the win in their headlines.
It should be noted that the USA Today opted not to include Williams’ name in their headline for the Scott victory. Taking a glance around the web, they didn’t have a lot of company.
