Steve Yzerman dipping his pen in company ink?

Though the Wings are one of the best teams in the league and are on the doorstep of another 100 point season, two very strange things have occurred in the last couple of weeks.

1)The re-signing of Darren McCarty

2)Not trading for Sergei Fedorov

And both those things have the stamp of one person.

Steve Yzerman.

As VP of the Red Wings, Yzerman is involved with decisions made with regard to personnel. And what better way to involve yourself with personnel than to get one of your buddies back on the team.

Make no bones about it, Darren McCarty was basically rendered useless in Calgary. In 32 games last year, he didn’t record a single point.

So it seems strange that the Red Wings, a world class organization and a successful hockey team would need the efforts of a 35 year old winger who can barely skate.

Everybody knows that Yzerman and McCarty were buddy-buddy back in the day.

A favor to a friend, perhaps?

Hmm?

But that is nothing compared to not trading for Sergei Federov. For those of you not in touch with the NHL, Sergei got traded for a prospect. Considering the scoring deficiencies the Red Wings have had in recent playoff runs and their need for a 2nd line center, the move to trade for him would have made a lot of sense.

And GM Ken Holland admitted on two radio stations that a pitch was made for Sergei but that not EVERYONE agreed.

February 27, Detroit Free Press: Mike Valenti: Did you try and get Sergei Fedorov back to Detroit?

Ken Holland: I had conversations with Scott Howsen from Columbus, yes.

Terry Foster: What ultimately did they want for you, or why did that not happen?

Holland: Well I would say to you that ultimately we had our entire staff here, we had a mixed bag on whether it was the right move or not. Because we had a mixed bag, we offered a certain price, obviously the price wasn’t enough and we’re comfortable with it.

Hmm?

Considering the icy relationship between Yzerman and Fedorov, its a wonder who put the kibosh on the trade.

If the Wings don’t perform well in the playoffs, these two situations will be magnified.

But will the media take a look at the man behind the scenes?

What'd you think of this?
