Tennis player Bojana Jovanovski heads to wrong Carlsbad for tournament
Serbian tennis pro Bojana Jovanovski got a rude awakening earlier this week when she flew into the wrong city for a tournament. Her intended destination was Carlsbad, California for the Mercury Insurance Open but instead, she arrived in Carlsbad, New Mexico. Someone needs a new travel agent–particularly one who’s a bit more familiar with U.S. geography.
Upon arriving in New Mexico, a man approached her at the airport, presumably because she looked so out of place in a desert city of 26,000 people.
“What are you doing here?” the man asked. “Are you playing tennis?”
“Yeah, it’s a tennis tournament,” Jovanovski replied.
“Here?”
The 19-year-old Serbian called the tournament again, wondering where her ride was. She was told the driver was looking for her. “I am the only person here,” she told them. “How can you not see me?”
“Are you in Carlsbad in California or in New Mexico?” the voice at the other end of the phone asked.
In the end, Jovanovski did end up getting to the tournament, albeit a half-hour before the match started. And yes, it appears the lack of sleep and extra travel may have had something to do with her first round exit to Roberta Vinci.
