Guyism’s daily look at what’s hot in the world of sports.
We’ll forgive you for missing the Women’s NCAA National Championship last night. Without some of the bigger programs in there, it sort of loses its luster. But don’t tell that to the Texas A&M Aggies who won were their first national title in the sport defeating Notre Dame 76-70. The Aggies were led by senior Danielle Adams who scored 22 of her game-high 30 points in the dramatic second half.
ACC basketball is known to be feisty on the court. But off the court, well, this one is new. NC State AD Debbie Yow has accused Maryland coach Gary Williams (16-year veteran) of interfering with their coaching search. “I don’t have a reputation across all men’s basketball of being difficult to work with,” she said Tuesday. “I have a reputation of not getting along with Gary Williams, who has tried to sabotage the search. Come on, we all know that. OK, so whatever”. Wow, just wow. Should make for an interesting game in the fall.
When the Chicago White Sox acquired Adam Dunn over the winter, they didn’t think they’d need to shelve him this early. The DH will be out for at least the next week after undergoing an emergency appendectomy. They’ll miss his services too, as Dunn is batting .286 with a home run and 5 RBI’s early in the season.
Of the 13 players hospitalized in the Iowa football workout fiasco, only one has asked to leave the team. Defensive back Willie Lowe wants to regain his strength and would like to take a year off away from the program. “I don’t know,” Lowe said. “I would like to be able to sit out a year, regain my strength, feel fine and play again. But I don’t know. I am still down 20 pounds and I am having headaches every few days.” Lowe is not the only player experiencing long terms problems. Parents of two other players have expressed concern for their sons who have headaches and other lingering issues.
