The 13th hole was not kind to former MVP Kevin Mitchell
If you’re an amateur golfer, bad days are par for the course, so to speak. Errant shots and missed putts are a regular occurrence. Perhaps you’ve even got into it with a group for hitting a tee shot too close to them. But brawling with another golfer because of differing opinions on a teacher? That’s something new. Former baseball MVP Kevin Mitchell was sentenced to three years probation after punching a golfer on a course in San Diego last year.
Mitchell, 49, who played 13 seasons with five teams, including the San Diego Padres, was charged with attacking a man on the 13th hole of the course in a dispute that began over differing opinions of a golf teacher.
Mitchell’s victim, according to court evidence, criticized the teacher’s lessons and Mitchell disagreed. Mitchell has had other run-ins with the law involving allegations of violence.
This is not something new for Mitchell as he’s known as a bit of hot-head. In 1999, he beat up his own father after an argument–presumably that one wasn’t over his golf teacher. Then in 2000 as a minor league manager, he was suspended for nine games after punching the opposing team’s owner in the mouth during a brawl.
So, if you happen to run into Mitchell in the street, best to keep your mouth shut. Otherwise, make sure you have good dental coverage.
