For the first time in her young career, Caroline Wozniacki is the #1 seed at a Grand Slam event. The 20-year-old Dane is coming off back-to-back singles titles in Montreal and New Haven and has four titles already this year. Should Wozniacki win her first major at the 2010 U.S. Open, she will replace Serena Williams as the #1 player in the world.
Truly amazing what twelve months can do for someone’s career. At this time last year, Wozniacki was virtually an unknown outside the tennis world. She had won titles but at much smaller WTA sites like Stockholm and Denmark. But at the 2009 U.S. Open, Wozniacki along with American Melanie Oudin became the Flushing Meadow media darlings. Though she eventually lost to Kim Clijsters in the finals, she skyrocketed all the way up to #6 in the world.
As it stands now, there are few female tennis players in the world as popular as her. It also doesn’t hurt that she’s easy on the eyes.
