The Lions must really like Nate Burleson, Kyle Vanden Bosch
The Lions are a terrible team and even worse, they’re a crappy franchise but that doesn’t mean they can’t make splashes in free agency. As the clock struck midnight and the free agency period began, the Lions all but locked up wide receiver Nate Burleson and are wining/dining Kyle Vanden Bosch
Head coach Jim Schwartz was paying a visit to the home of defensive end Kyle Vanden Bosch in Nashville promptly at 12:01 a.m., trying to lock up the team’s primary target. And barely two hours into free agency, the team reportedly had one of the league’s first free-agent deals done, acquiring receiver Nate Burleson.
Burleson agreed to terms with the Lions on a five-year, $25 million deal, including $11 million guaranteed, a league source confirmed.
Burleson had 63 catches for 812 yards and three touchdowns for the Seattle Seahawks last season, his highest output since a career-best season in 2004 for the Minnesota Vikings. His offensive coordinator then — Scott Linehan — will be his new coordinator in Detroit now.
We’ll get to Burleson in a second but let’s just stop and take a moment to realize how ridiculous free agency has gotten in sports.
Jim Schwartz showed up to Vanden Bosch’s home in the middle of the night. Where I come from, that’s called stalking and worthy of a restraining order. Anywhere in the city limits of my fine hometown of Detroit and that will get you a 9mm in your eye.
As for Burleson, it appears the Lions are doing everything they can to take some of the heat off Calvin Johnson. Apparently the venerable Dennis Northcutt wasn’t “cutting” it.
See, I wrote this whole blurb just so I could put that dumb pun in there.
