The North Dakota Fighting Sioux finally getting rid of nickname

The University of North Dakota have finally decided that insulting an entire ethnic group with slurs probably isn’t a smart way to go about business. And though the board of education actually decided in 2009 to get rid of the Fighting Sioux name, no timetable was set to institute the change. That will come to a halt as the 2010-2011 will be the final year of the nickname’s existence.
North Dakota remains of the only institutions in the NCAA to use Native American nicknames. Schools like Illinois have gotten rid of popular mascot Chief Illiniwek, Eastern Michigan eliminated the Hurons, and St. John’s the “Redman” just to name a few.
The Florida State Seminoles however, were granted a waiver in 2005 from the NCAA because of its close ties to the Seminole tribe in Florida.
All in all, consider this your Friday history lesson. When you oppress a group of people for centuries and steal their land, it’s not a good idea to rub it in by using their traditions as mascots and slurs.
