The strange tale of the IUPUI women’s basketball team
A few players and assistant coaches leaving in a several year span is nothing new when it comes to collegiate sports. The turnover is especially high at smaller schools when the aforementioned are given opportunities elsewhere at bigger programs. But 28 in a 4 year span? Something smells fishy at IUPUI (no pun intended).
…A three-member panel will investigate allegations of “emotional abuse” and NCAA rules violations in IUPUI’s women’s basketball program.
…Players alleged an atmosphere of fear, favoritism, humiliation and inappropriate interest in their personal lives.
…One player told The Star that Hart asked explicitly about her sexual orientation. Others described a reckless postgame rant by the coach that centered on accusations of players breaking team rules by becoming involved in intimate relationships with each other.
This goes far beyond some of these ladies possibly being over-sensitive to a coach berating them. Asking a player if she bats for the other team isn’t a technique even the most brutal of coaches would employ.
“Turnovers! Turnovers! Turnovers! We’re getting killed out there on the boards ladies. And Sheila, stop staring at your teammates in the shower. Wendy, a little more hustle and a lot less butt grabbin on the floor”
Hmm. Interesting tactic.
