Tim Tebow is pretty popular; sets jersey sales record for draftee
Tim Tebow may have been a reach in the first round for the Denver Broncos but fans sure did “reach” for his jersey last weekend. Tebow’s jersey set a record in sales for a NFL draftee, breaking the previous record set by Jets QB Mark Sanchez. Not bad for a guy who many thought wouldn’t even be on the radar this season.
While the league doesn’t disclose sales totals, the former University of Florida quarterback logged the most jersey orders since 2006, the first year NFLShop.com joined with GSI Commerce Inc. to expand its online store. Tebow’s sales totals eclipsed the previous draft-weekend record of Sanchez, who in 2009 was the first quarterback taken by the Jets with a top-five pick since Joe Namath.
“It’s a pretty substantial difference between him and the next guy,” NFL spokeswoman Joanna Hunter said of Tebow’s jersey sales.
Considering his growing popularity already amongst Broncos fans, I’m beginning to wonder if people will call for Tebow to start if/when Kyle Orton struggles this year. And yes, I realize I conveniently forgot the other Broncos signal-caller extraordinaire, Brady Quinn. But being lost in the shuffle has been Quinn’s M.O. his entire NFL career.
Should be interesting this year to say the least…stay tuned
